Grounding: finding and being with our true nature

Discover the power of grounding, and practical ways to ground yourself when you need it most

In our fast-paced, modern world, it's easy to lose touch with our true selves amidst the chaos of everyday life. The constant buzz of technology, the demands of work, and the hustle and bustle of daily responsibilities can leave us feeling disconnected and overwhelmed. However, there is a simple yet profound practice that can help us find our way back to our roots and reestablish a deep connection with our true nature – grounding.

Understanding Grounding:

Grounding, also known as earthing, is a practice that involves connecting with the Earth's energy by physically touching the ground with our bare skin. This can be achieved by walking barefoot on grass, sand, soil, or any natural surface. The concept is based on the idea that the Earth carries a subtle electric charge, and by making direct contact with it, we can absorb its healing energy.

Why is Grounding so important?

Grounding is considered important for several reasons, both from a scientific and holistic perspective. Sinking your bare feet into green grass, soft earth or sand can have a profound effect on your wellbeing: Earth has a subtle electric charge, and our bodies accumulate positive electrons from various sources, including electronic devices, stress, and pollution. Grounding allows us to discharge these excess positive electrons, restoring electrical balance in our bodies. This can contribute to a more stable and harmonious internal environment.

The Benefits of Grounding:

  1. Stress Reduction: Grounding has been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system. The Earth's energy helps balance the body's electrical charge, reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm. This can be especially beneficial in today's high-stress environments.

  2. Improved Sleep: Many people report better sleep after incorporating grounding practices into their daily routine. The calming effect on the nervous system can help regulate sleep patterns and improve overall sleep quality.

  3. Enhanced Well-being: Grounding has been linked to improved mood and overall well-being. Connecting with nature allows us to step away from the chaos of our daily lives, fostering a sense of peace and contentment.

  4. Reduced Inflammation: Some studies suggest that grounding may have anti-inflammatory effects on the body. Inflammation is a common factor in many chronic diseases, so reducing it through grounding could have long-term health benefits.

  5. Increased Energy Levels: Grounding helps rebalance the body's energy and promotes a sense of vitality. Many people report feeling more energized and rejuvenated after spending time connecting with the Earth.

How to Incorporate Grounding into Your Life:

  1. Walk Barefoot: Take off your shoes and walk on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or soil. Even a short stroll can make a significant difference.

  2. Gardening: Engage in gardening activities where you come into direct contact with the soil. Planting flowers, vegetables, or herbs can be a therapeutic and grounding experience.

  3. Mindful Nature Time: Spend quality time in nature without distractions. Whether it's a hike in the woods, a day at the beach, or simply sitting in a park, being present in natural surroundings is key.

  4. Yoga and Meditation: Incorporate grounding techniques into your yoga or meditation practice. Visualise roots extending from your body into the Earth, anchoring you to its energy.

  5. The 5 fingers exercise: this simple exercise is super useful for those times when we need it most to bring us back down to earth, into the present moment and out of our minds lost in thoughts, disconnected from our bodies. Using one hand:

    1. Count 5 things you can see - preferably natural items in your surroundings.

    2. Count 4 things you can hear - birds, traffic, the wind

    3. Count 3 things you can touch

    4. Count 2 things you can smell

    5. Count 1 thing you can taste

“Each sense is a current of divinity, sparkling with mystery… each sight, sound, smell, taste & touch - a greeting from the beloved”
Radiance Sutras - L.Roche

In a world filled with constant stimulation and noise, grounding serves as a powerful tool to reconnect with our true nature. By incorporating this simple practice into our daily lives, we can reduce stress, improve our well-being, and foster a deeper connection with the Earth and ourselves. Let's take a step back, kick off our shoes, and allow the Earth to remind us of the strength and resilience that resides within us all.
